This is NOT okay: Emma’s story

Hello, my name is Emma Mazzullo I am a preschool teacher at La Petite Academy in Albuquerque New Mexico. I’m going to tell you my story because my story is one I think everyone should know. I’ve worked in education for the past 12 years and am currently working as a preschool teacher for about a year.

I am currently suffering from COVID and have been sick and out of work for two weeks. I found out that we are not getting paid for being out of work for two weeks.

I called my HR department to ask if I would get paid while out with COVID and the HR representative told me they had never heard of anything like that. I said OK there’s my answer. I am very upset and disappointed with the way that they do things and how they don’t want to pay us when we are sick. They do need us very much.

Without sick time we’re subjected to being sick while worrying about paying for things like food and rent.

It really upsets me to see that in my twelve years working as an educator this has been the least responsive and supportive group I have ever worked for.

I worked for twelve and a half years at the public schools and they would bend over backward to give us sick pay they never wanted is coming in sick. Working for a company like La petite I have noticed that if we’re sick and can work, we must work. I’ve also noticed that now with COVID it doesn’t matter if we work. They are subjecting us to high-risk situations with no pay if we get sick. That’s my story and I feel like it’s not ok and needs to be heard.

I’m fed up. I’m sure you are too and want paid sick leave.
